FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Safety Beds
If you require a fully enclosed safety bed at the conference, please email info@angelman.org. We encourage you to bring your own safety bed if possible. There are a limited number of beds available for us to use so they will be supplied on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to ensure they can be shipped in time for the conference, you must submit your request no later than June 1, 2022.
Do you offer any financial help for the conferences?
We do offer some scholarships that cover the room only; these are available when registration opens.
What do we do about meals?
There will be some meals provided and we will have more details on what those are in a few months with the final agenda. There are many restaurants on the Kalahari grounds. www.kalahariresorts.com/texas.
Will we have any free time?
If you choose to attend sessions all day, you will have free time in the evenings. If you need time during the day, feel free to take it!
What is there to do in the area?
The Kalahari Resort is a water park and the fee for the park is included in your room price. Within the resort, grounds are also rides, an arcade, escape rooms, bowling, and an amphitheater, as well as a spa and fitness area. www.kalahariresorts.com/texas
Where can I find the schedule of sessions?
The best way to find the schedule is in the conference app (you’ll get the link for the app prior to the conference). There will also be a printable pdf of the schedule on the ASF website that you can print out. The printable schedule is subject to change and those changes will be reflected in the app.
Can my child with AS sit in the sessions with me? Can any of my children sit in the sessions with me?
We understand that having care for your individual with AS or any of your other children during the sessions can be challenging. If you would like to attend and a child needs to attend with you, please just ensure that if they need a break from the session and start to get overwhelmed, you will step out. All sessions will be recorded and available at a later date, after the conference.
Is there anyone who can watch my child with AS while I am in a session?
There are no caretakers at the hotel other than the one/s you bring! Many people bring a caretaker or other family member with them to the conference for just this purpose. You can also look at www.care.com to see if there are caregivers in the area that may be helpful for you.
What if I have to cancel my room at the last minute?
The resort’s cancelation policy is as follows: If you cancel more than 72 hours before your arrival date, there is a $30 fee. If you cancel less than 72 hours before your arrival date, the fee is one night’s lodging.
How much is parking at the hotel?
General parking is free at the resort. However, if you choose to use the valet service, you will be charged.
Can I get contact info on someone I met at the conference?
We recommend getting contact information from others prior to the end of the conference. The ASF does not share emails unless a family gives us permission. You can continue to contact others through the conference app for a limited amount of time after the conference.
Can I get an extra bed/cot/safety bed in my room? Will they charge me?
As long as the resort has cots available, you can get one to your room for a fee of $20 per night. We are also working on a partnership with our Safe Place Bedding group to have a limited number of safety beds on sight.
Can I get copies of the slides from a presentation?
In most cases, after the conference, slides will be available upon request.
Should we attend if our child is newly diagnosed with Angelman syndrome?
We find that the ASF Conferences are wonderful for newly diagnosed families as they give you an opportunity early on in your journey to connect with other Angelman families, learn from the experts and build a community. It can be overwhelming at times, but take time to reflect and take it one step at a time. If you would like to speak to someone who has attended as a newly diagnosed family, please contact our resource director at resources@angelman.org.
Should we attend if we have been to a conference before and are an “experienced” Angelman family?
The ASF Family Conference is a family reunion! We work hard to bring new content to each Conference to meet the needs of all families. We strongly believe that any family will find value in this experience. Also, you do not want to miss this location. You will not only get the benefit of connecting and learning, but you will also have the world’s largest water park in your backyard.
How do I get from the airport to the hotel?
The hotel is 28 miles from the airport. There are taxi services, rideshare services, and rental cars. See the Austin-Bergstrom Airport website for information.
How do I connect with others when I am there?
We will have several ways to get you connected. You can attend our new conference orientation webinar prior to the conference and meet others through that. We will also have attendee get-togethers on the first and second evenings of the conference. We can connect you with a volunteer mentor that can support you and answer any questions you may have at the conference as well.
Do conference attendees get access to the onsite water parks?
Attendees staying at the Kalahari Resort will receive access to the onsite water parks. Attendees not staying at the Kalahari Resort can purchase water park passes by clicking here.
